Almost there

Hey!!! Its been a while. Haven't gone nowhere, still at psych ward and battling with my studies. Have about 2 weeks to my psych finals... Phew!!
Moved to the acute ward, where more severe cases are. Majority of the patients we met were diagnosed with various kinds of personality disorder or mania (elevated mood)...why are they in acute ward? the reason might be that they pose a threat to themselves or those around them. For instance, personality disorder leads to suicide attempt (the theory behind this is yet to be known). Crazy huh?!

Info on some types of personality disorder (pd):
Please do not try to diagnose yourself
1. paranoid pd-intense suspicion & distrust toward others. Often hostile, irritable, envious or angry.
2. schizoid pd- isolated lifestyle with a lack of interest in social interaction. Thought of as eccentric or introverted.
3. schizotypal pd- strikingly odd, engage in magical thinking & experience episodes of derealization.
4. boderline pd- unstable mood, they are on the borderline between neurosis & psychosis, marked suicide acts.

Earlier today had this discussion with a friend & colleague about 2 patients we saw who came in because they had manic episodes. And am like seriously why would they even consider it a mental disorder?  Check this out from wiki "Characteristics of mania include rapid speech, racing thoughts, decreased need for sleep, hypersexualityeuphoria, impulsiveness, grandiosity, and an uncontrollably intense interest in goal-directed activities."  Anyways will have to talk to my tutor about it and many more unanswered questions. :-)

Stay sane!!!

Yours truly
Mee :-)
